Dickens by Candlelight

Adapted by Robin Olson

An Orlando tradition returns at Renaissance Theatre Company, December 21–22

A new twist of a beloved holiday tale told as a three-person, interactive show providing theatergoers with a delightfully unique opportunity to experience A Christmas Carol.

For over 21 years, this original adaptation played in various venues throughout Orlando. We’re proud to finally host its return this year at Renaissance Theatre Company!

Come early at 7 PM for caroling! Then the show starts at 7:30.

This adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Robin Olson first debuted in Orlando in 1997 and has been a staple of the community since. Audiences are encouraged to interact throughout the production – as well as enjoy cookies and treats (included in ticket price). For extra holiday spirit, arrive early for caroling before the show!

Featuring Terry Olson, Robin Olson, and Monica Tamborello, the show provides theatre-goers with a delightfully unique opportunity to experience Dickens' masterpiece the way it was intended to be told: as a Ghost Story.

The return of Dickens by Candlelight to Orlando after a four-year hiatus lines up well with Renaissance’s mission. We’ve been the birthplace of other original immersive theatrical experiences since opening our doors in October, and are always excited about hosting local work.

Terry Olson, one of the three performers in the show and Orange County's Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs (our "Chief Arts Instigator") says this about the show's return: "Our daughter Molly was 1 year old the first time we did this production. She's 25 now, and she's been asking us to do it here again. It's been four years, and it made me wonder if this show is a family tradition for other Central Florida families as well."

Robin Olson, who wrote the adaptation of the famed tale, has this to say: "To have performed in this show off and on for over two decades has been really special, because of course you change over time. So the lines mean different things for you, and you approach the characters differently. Actors don't always get to play the same role for over 20 years, so it's been really amazing to grow with this show, which I hope stands on its own, even when I'm not doing it myself. It's a legacy of sorts, and we are just thrilled to bring it back to our hometown."

"We are thrilled to welcome Robin Olson's holiday favorite to Renaissance Theatre Company. Our mission is to support original works by local artists, and Robin's play is not only that, it's a certifiable Orlando tradition," says Donald Rupe, one of the founders of Renaissance Theatre Company. "Growing up as a Theatre kid in Central Florida, I remember seeing posters for this show each holiday season, and it's sort of kismet that it will play in our new building this year."
